A delegation from Privas arrived at York Station on Friday, May 5th to be greeted by their hosts for the weekend. On Saturday, they were welcomed by the Mayor and civic gifts were exchanged. Both guests and hosts then watched the Coronation procession and ceremony on a large screen in the Market Place, along with many other residents. A fish and chip lunch in the Wetherby Whaler was enjoyed by all, followed by a boules competition for the McGill Challenge Trophy. In the evening, the darts competition took place with a buffet supper at the Sports Association. Sunday saw a visit to Castle Howard including lunch and a guided tour round the house. On Monday, there was a group visit to the Yorvik Viking Museum in York and then free time until the Farewell Barbecue at the Bridge Hotel in the evening. The McGill Challenge Trophy was presented to Wetherby. We said our fond farewells at York Station on Tuesday, May 9th.
Some comments from our hosts, together with a selection of photos from the weekend:
Marjorie – Castle Howard was a great choice and our French friends enjoyed wandering round the gardens and visiting the house. Everyone appreciated the delicious lunch where we had the room to ourselves. Seeing the Coronation was the highlight of the weekend.
Norma – The weather was lovely for our visit to Castle Howard and showed the house and grounds in the best light. Lunch in the restaurant was enjoyed by all. We all returned home enlightened and pleasantly tired.
Luisa and Tim – we took Dominique and Jean-Marie to the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington. They were delighted to see the French Officers’ Mess from WW2. They also really enjoyed the fish and chip lunch at the Wetherby Whaler.
